Live-In Caregiver Program

The Live-in Caregiver Program allows professional caregivers to work in Canada. Caregivers are individuals who are qualified to work without supervision in a private household providing care for children, elderly persons or people who have disabilities.   There are four main requirements caregivers must meet to qualify under the Live-in Caregiver Program:

  • Caregiver must have successfully completed the equivalent of a Canadian high school education

  • Caregiver must have six months of full-time training in a classroom setting or twelve months of full-time paid employment, including at least six months of continuous employment with one employer in a field or occupation related to the job you are seeking as a live-in caregiver.

  • Caregiver must be able to speak, read and understand either English or French at a level that allows to function independently in a home setting

  • Caregiver must have a written employment contract between future employer and caregiver. The contract defines job duties, hours of work, salary and benefits. The contract also reinforces employer's legal responsibilities. This requirement helps provide a fair working arrangement between the caregiver and the employer and provides both parties with a clear understanding of what is expected of them.

How to apply for work permit:

  1. Your employer requests a job confirmation letter from an HRSDC-Service Canada Centre. Once the employer has received the positive labour market opinion, employer sends this letter to the caregiver to apply for work permit.

  1. A signed employer employee contract is also required and this has to meet the labour standards and working conditions in the province where the caregiver will be working.

  1. Caregiver has to submit the work permit application overseas. Depending on the caregiver’s country of residence, each kit and instruction is specific to each country and have specific information for applicants.

  1. There is $150.00 processing fee to process the work permit application overseas. The consulate or Canadian embassy responsible for your area can tell you where and how to pay this fee.

All live-in caregivers must pass a medical examination and police clearance before being approved to enter Canada and receive their work permit.
